On Tuesday, the District Attorney’s office revealed that the man who got shot in the back of the head at a diner in New York had been in a romantic relationship with the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. Heiton Camacho-Bonilla, 37, allegedly shot 37-year-old Harrison Ferreiras at the Seafood King Fish Market in Washington Heights on December 6.
The suspect reportedly took Ferreiras’ phone, then demanded a restaurant employee’s phone and cash from the register.
Authorities now claim that Camacho-Bonilla staged the robbery to make the attack on Ferreiras appear random. In reality, he was allegedly motivated by jealousy over Ferreiras’ past relationship with his ex.
Officials state that Ferreiras had a “brief romantic fling” with the mother of Camacho-Bonilla’s child, occurring eight months after Camacho-Bonilla’s relationship with the woman had ended.
Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Alexander Patton told a judge, “This act was premeditated, deliberate, callous and it is by sheer luck that the victim is alive, albeit with significant injuries and pain,” as reported by the New York Post.
“[Camacho-Bonilla] attempted to assassinate the victim based on jealousy, and tried to throw investigators off his scent by pretending it was a robbery.”
Ferreiras is in the hospital in serious condition after getting shot in the cheek, as reported by WABC. Although he’s now stable, his mom told the New York Post that he can’t talk at the moment.
Camacho-Bonilla faces charges of attempted murder, robbery, and assault.
