MIAMI – A year after Dwayne Haskins, a 24-year-old NFL quarterback, died in South Florida after being hit by a dump truck while walking on a freeway, his wife is suing a number of people and places, including a Miami bar.
Haskins’s family says that the Pittsburgh Steelers player was the target of a plan to rob and blackmail him and that he was also given drugs.
The Florida Highway Patrol says that in April 2022, Haskins was trying to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 against oncoming traffic. He was hit and killed by a dump truck.
The complaint, which was filed in Broward County court, names more than a dozen defendants, including the dump truck driver and the Florida Department of Transportation. It also names four businesses, including Drive Shack in West Palm Beach, a Wyndham hotel in Boca Raton, the Blue Anchor Pub in Delray Beach, and the E11EVEN nightclub in Miami, as being negligent.
The 26-page lawsuit says that the businesses let “customers use drugs and drug other customers, including (Haskins), even when (their) own employees were there and saw the same thing happening.”
In the lawsuit, the widow of Haskins, Kalabrya Haskins, is asking for specific damages and a trial by a jury.
Haskins’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he died, according to the autopsy report. He was found to have ketamine in his system, which is a drug that can be used for fun.
Local 10 News called the businesses being sued to find out what they had to say. As of Monday evening, none of the companies had given any.
