The failure of Congress to approve long-awaited legislation addressing the U.S.-Mexico border and aid to Israel, Ukraine, and other American allies led former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, to accuse Congress of “lying to the American people” on Sunday.
After months of negotiations, a committee of senators from both parties came up with a plan that combined overseas aid with border priority. But the accord, as well as other foreign aid bills authorized by the Senate, was recently rejected by large segments of Republicans.
H. R. 2, a hardline border bill that was passed by the House last year, has no chance of passing the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Haley said that, “Congress needs to do their job and make sure that they go and do everything they can for national security.”
“Congress is failing because they are making this sound like you have to choose between Ukraine and Israel or securing the border,” Haley continued. “They are lying to the American people. Thatās a false premise. We can do both.”
Republican legislators have mainly advocated for linking immigration legislation and foreign aid. It remains uncertain if there will be any advancement on this objective this week, as both House and Senate members are returning to their home districts for a recess.
Additionally, on Sunday, Haley urged President Joe Biden to extensively discuss the significance of foreign aid with Americans nationwide.
“Joe Biden needs to be speaking more to the American people about what this package means and why it affects the American people and why it protects them from further war,” she stated.
The GOP presidential hopeful is preparing to challenge former President Donald Trump in South Carolina’s crucial Republican primary this Saturday. During her Sunday interview, Haley chose not to reveal whether she would back Trump if he secures the 2024 GOP nomination.
“I’m going to run and I’m going to win. And yāall can talk about support later. Right now you can ask him if heās going to support me when I’m the nominee,” Haley stated.
