The vicious individual who threw a helpless puppy down a Lower Manhattan high-rise’s trash chute last month is still at large, and dog enthusiasts in the Big Apple are calling for justice.

This week, the NYPD announced that, despite ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made in connection with the unsettling event on August 23 that saw a shih tzu being thrown down a 17-story trash chute within the Gov. Alfred E Smith Houses, a NYCHA building close to the Brooklyn Bridge.

About 10:30 a.m., a building employee found the dog in the compactor, yelping and barely hanging on to life after it broke all four legs in the fall. Although it was given to the ASPCA for care, it was not able to be saved.

This week, almost 700 people signed an online petition denouncing the NYCHA and NYPD for their “lack of seriousness in prioritizing” the issue and their “inexcusable negligence.”

As stated in the Change.org petition, “Such cruelty inflicted upon this innocent life is a crime and it shakes many New Yorkers to their core,” urging the authorities to “find and prosecute” the dog killer.

“We implore the NYPD and NYCHA to intensify their efforts to investigate this case and catch the offender. Animals, like humans, have the right to live without fear and deserve justice when they are harmed,” it states.

Intentionally killing or gravely hurting a companion animal is punishable by up to two years in jail under New York’s statutes against animal cruelty.
