Oklahoma Contemplates Dropping Foreign Language Graduation Mandate

A law to remove the need that pupils learn a foreign language in order to graduate from high school is awaiting the governor’s signature.

The co-author of House measure 3278, state senator Adam Pugh, stated that districts requested the measure and that he was merely attempting to give them as much flexibility as possible.

The bill would create new graduation standards for grades 8 through 12 throughout the state. The prerequisites for science, math, and social studies are maintained.

According to the author, districts wish to provide alternative courses to graduates who do not intend to attend college.

Districts would still have the option to mandate that all students take a foreign language; this would be entirely optional. On Monday, the bill was approved 35-11 by the Senate. Gov. Kevin Stitt’s signature is now pending.

A different bill that was considered on Monday aims to mandate that insurance companies pay for cancer sufferers’ infertility treatments.

Senate Bill 1334, commonly known as Corinne’s Law, aims to ensure that women who experience severe cancer treatment do not lose their infertility.

The bill’s wording states that “standard fertility preservation services” would have to be covered by health insurance policies.

State Representative Josh West, a Republican from Grove, stated, “It would require insurance companies to cover the retrieval, not the storage, but the retrieval only for that procedure.”

With a 90-0 vote, SB 1334 was approved unanimously and will now be sent to the governor’s desk.
