Families in large groups are crowding a baggage claim area surrounded by suitcases, makingshift mattresses out of the few blankets available at Boston Logan Airport, suggesting that the number of migrants receiving refuge there has increased.
A few months ago, there were just a few dozen migrants staying at the Boston airport to sleep on the floor. However, new images obtained by The Post indicate that the number of migrants sleeping there has increased to over a hundred.
Migrants are regularly taken from the airport to state welcome centers and then returned back by night because they lack the personnel and resources to adequately care for such a huge population of inhabitants.
According to WBUR, the migrants’ conditions at the airport are less than ideal. They have to contend with cold air conditioning, hard floors, lights shining in their faces all night, and loud announcements from the airport that keep them awake.
Since November of last year, when the state’s shelters were filled to capacity with 7,500 families, migrants have been staying in Logan’s baggage area. As a result, they have been waiting on waitlists to be lodged at the airport.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey stated in May that a former jail located about one hour southwest of Boston would be transformed into a shelter for around 400 homeless families, with 150 spots reserved for migrant families, in an effort to address the state’s expanding migrant population.
Beyond Logan, airports are now frequently used as lodging facilities for migrants.
