On Tuesday, Miami police arrested Carlos Alexis Aybar-Oliveras, a convicted felon from Hialeah. This comes less than a month after he allegedly assaulted a woman outside a supermarket in Allapattah, brandishing a gun and threatening her and her family.
The incident took place at the Presidente Supermarket on 3001 NW 17th Ave. on September 17. The woman was shopping with her daughter and three grandchildren, aged 3, 5, and 6.
Around 8:15 p.m., Aybar-Oliveras reportedly approached and began to verbally harass the woman. The arrest report does not clarify whether he had any prior connection with the victim or what might have triggered the altercation.
According to the report, Aybar-Oliveras, 43, then took out his phone and threatened to photograph her, claiming he would send it to a friend to have her deported.
The situation escalated further. Allegedly, Aybar-Oliveras punched the woman in the face. He then went to his minivan, retrieved a firearm, returned to the woman, and, while holding the weapon at his side, threatened to “kill her and her family.”
Afterward, Aybar-Oliveras stowed the gun in his waistband, returned to his van, and drove away at high speed, narrowly avoiding hitting the woman and bystanders.
Officers subsequently located Aybar-Oliveras, who had a prior conviction for felony child neglect, at his apartment on West 11th Street in Hialeah and took him
“(Aybar-Oliveras) stated he usually carries a toy water gun that looks like a firearm, and he may have used it that day, but he doesn’t recall, as he was intoxicated that day,” according to the police report.
He was taken into custody for five charges of serious assault using a firearm, along with one charge each for having a weapon as a previously convicted felon and unlawfully carrying a hidden weapon. Additionally, he faced a misdemeanor battery charge.
Aybar-Oliveras is currently detained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond set at $44,000, as indicated by jail records on Wednesday afternoon.
