An eight-year-old child was found shot early on Tuesday morning, and an intensive investigation is currently taking place in a neighborhood in Sacramento.

The location was on Kit Carson Street, off of Muir Way, close to Revere Street. According to Sacramento police, they were called to investigate gunshot reports about 4:45 in the morning. A young person there appeared to have been shot.

When the young person was taken to the hospital, according to the officers, she was talking and attentive. According to the authorities, her condition is critical. Investigations are ongoing to determine exactly what preceded the girl’s shooting.

According to Sacramento police, the girl was dropping her mother off at work and then heading home with her father.

“Things have not changed. Unfortunately, September, I was here at the scene of a man murdered and then a week later at the scene with two women being shot at this exact same corridor,” community advocate Berry Accius stated.

Gun violence is nothing new in the Alder Grove housing complex.

“I heard somebody start screaming and I came outside to find my neighbor’s daughter shot,” resident Melissa Cromwell stated.

According to Sacramento police, they do not have a suspect in custody and are investigating whether or not the shooting was intentional.

“Let me be explicitly clear. There’s nothing that would justify this 8-year-old girl in the hospital fighting for her life,” Officer Anthony Gamble stated. “The community should be hurt. The police department is hurt. We’re hurting for the family of this 8-year-old fighting for her life.”

Just the day prior, there was another gunshot in this same location. Police are looking for any correlations.

“I’m already doing a vigil for an 18-year-old, and I’m hoping I don’t have to do a vigil for an 8-year-old,” Accius stated. “It frustrates me because things could have been done to possibly prevent it.”

One resident of the complex said that during this time of year, it’s difficult to tell the difference between fireworks and gunshots. She is concerned about every child residing there.
