Sacramento State may be able to join the Pac-12 given the recent announcement of plans to renovate Hornet Stadium. Facilities used to be the issue, but now time is the new one.
“At this moment, this is a campaign to raise awareness about the limited time we have,” said Eric Guerra, a Sacramento City Council member and Sac State alumnus.
On Friday, lawmakers and representatives of the local business community gathered to urge support for Sac State’s admission to the Pac-12. Sac 12 is a recently established committee that has been working on the drive for more than four years, and they believe the moment is right.
“We want to be part of all of these different schools. Whether it’s San Diego State, Fresno State, even Colorado and UNLV, they are all vying for this opportunity,” Guerra stated. “So what we’re saying is Sacramento has competitive athletes, the student body, a good media market.”
The Pac-12 claims that Sac State is the ideal candidate to fill its vacancy of two more colleges.
According to Lance Hastings, CEO of the California Manufacturers and Technology Association, “we’re going to urge the entire six-county region to support this effort, and someday soon, we’re going to be surrounded by 25,000 or more seats.”
“A market like ours with 2.6 million people, you pretty much live and die with your universities, and of course, the Pac-12 isn’t going to take us seriously, or the Mountain West, if we’re playing in a high school stadium,” Barry Broome, CEO of the Greater Sacramento Economic Council stated.

Sac State recently declared that Hornet Stadium will be completely rebuilt, starting from the ground up. The new multifunctional stadium will adhere to Pac-12 regulations.
“There’s so many students here. Parking is hard as is. Creating the needed space for all those students would be hard, but if everyone worked together as a team, it could be possible,” Sac State student Ashley Wong stated.
