GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After a horrific shooting in Gainesville, several locals feel the city has to undergo some kind of transformation.
Around one in the morning on Saturday, according to Gainesville Police Department detectives, a male was shot in the area of Simons nightclub. The victim was taken to the hospital, where they ultimately passed away from their injuries.
According to the police, the shooter ran away from the area, and there have been no arrests made as of yet.
According to a resident named Dustin Terry, “the majority of these shootings take place on the weekends.”
Simons lives a few streets away from where Terry resides. He is dissatisfied with the recent rise in the rate of criminal activity in this neighborhood.
The incident that took place on Saturday comes one month after a slew of gunshots that took place in Gainesville during the Easter holiday, including two shootings that took place near Simons on April 9.
“I don’t know what the police can do, but there needs to be something done,” said Terry. “There needs to be some action taken.”
Residents of the neighborhood think that there should be an increased presence of law enforcement, particularly on the weekends.
Alexander Pelfrui was quoted as saying, “I know that some people are more paranoid, and their paranoia causes them to not want to come out, which is not good for business in the Gainesville area.”
“I know that some people are more paranoid” “In my opinion if there were a greater number of police officers patrolling the area, perhaps some of these most recent crimes would not have taken place.”
Gainesville Police Department representatives have said that they are aware of which areas downtown have the highest rate of criminal activity. This next weekend, they want to have cops doing patrols across the neighborhood.
According to Sergeant Joseph Castor, “There is going to be enforcement in all parts of the city about the gun violence, especially those key areas where the gun violence is primarily happening occurring all the time.” “There is going to be enforcement in all parts of the city about the gun violence.”
