VERO BEACH, Fla. —Just a few days after a girl at Sebastian River High School was found to have a pistol in her luggage, parents expressed their concerns about student safety and called for more security measures, including as metal detectors, during a meeting of the Indian River County School Board on Monday.
Since the horrific tragedies that took place at Uvalde, Sandy Hook, and Parkland, which took place closer to home, the safety of schools in Indian River County has been a primary issue.
However, there are many who believe that the measures we take to safeguard our children may always be improved. What these parents are hoping to see is an additional emphasis placed on safety.
Everyone is aware of what’s at stake here. Everyone is well aware of the potential outcomes.One parent said that they should not wait for the next report of a school shooting in Indian River County to take action.
Kathleen Miller is a mother of two sons, both of whom are males. They are both students at an elementary institution located in Indian River County.
My sons are having a wonderful year so far, and they are really enjoying their classes. Miller was quoted as saying, “I don’t ever want that to change.”
Miller said that there would need to be changes made to other aspects for that to remain the same.
“The answer is fences, guard gates, and metal detectors,” stated Miller.
According to Jon Teske, who is in charge of safety and emergency operations, they are doing the best they can with what they have. This information was provided to CBS12 News.
“You need to create a spending plan that is practical for you. You are up against challenges in terms of both time and resources, such as money and tools. “Every year, you do the best you can with what you have,” Teske said.
The board of directors discussed the possibility of incorporating a new high-tech line of defense known as ZeroEyes at their meeting on Monday. Artificial intelligence is used in this line of defense in order to locate firearms.
“If a pistol or other kind of weapon is carelessly left on campus, our technology will detect it and immediately notify both us and the corporation so that they can investigate the situation. Therefore, it is possible for us to be in several places at once,” said Dr. David K. Moore, who is in charge of the schools in Indian River County.
According to Kimberly Barteau, a mother who spoke with CBS12 News, even that would not be sufficient. She said that in the beginning other things need to be altered.
“No metal detectors. There are none that are see-through. These youngsters are supposed to be learning in a classroom setting. Barteau was quoted as saying, “I’m not afraid of getting shot.”
