Maine state police report that late last month, the mother of two small daughters killed them and then killed herself.

In the small old mill town of Mechanic Falls, on July 27, the deaths of Hope Marie West, 6, Harmony Mae West, 11, and Jennifer Barney, 37, were discovered in the family’s apartment on Highland Avenue.

The day of the tragic discovery would have been the youngest girl’s seventh birthday.

According to a press release from the Mechanic Falls Police Department, the police were first called to the property in response to a tip of a stolen U-Haul truck that had not been returned. Sometime about 3:30 p.m. on that Saturday, the car was found.

“The officer and a deputy with the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Office attempted to make contact with the resident at that address as she was the person who had rented the truck,” Mechanic Falls Police Chief Jeffrey Goss stated. “It was discovered during their investigation that the resident, an adult female, was deceased inside her residence. Officers made entry into the home and discovered two children, who were also deceased, inside the residence.”

According to Goss, the matter was then given to the Maine State Police in accordance with usual procedure for incidents of this kind.

According to authorities, an animal control officer was dispatched to take care of the family’s dogs. According to the Sun Journal, neighbors claimed that the family owned a Doberman pinscher and a tiny white dog.

Within a few days, investigators had concluded that there had been two murders and a suicide at the crime scene. Neither the surviving family nor the police have suggested a reason for the violence, though.

An autopsy revealed that one of the girls had died from several stab wounds. The autopsy revealed that the other girl died from a variety of other unknown injuries.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner stated that additional testing was required to reach this judgment, hence the authorities have not disclosed the manner in which the murderer herself passed away.

In December 2019, Wilcox buried her 31-year-old son, who was the father of the two girls and the spouse of their killer.

In neighboring Lewiston, the two girls were born. Elm Street School was a public school serving grades pre-K through sixth. They both attended. But the girls allegedly stopped going to summer school classes a few weeks ago, and they had vanished from sight entirely.

The girls’ grandma has some thoughts on those last few weeks and days, even though the reason behind the tremendous loss is yet unknown.
