To address the historical maltreatment of Native Americans, efforts are being made to change names of streets that are insulting or to revise the lessons taught at historical sites.

There have been numerous attempts lately to reevaluate the treatment of Native Americans, and tribal members from all around California are taking part in this year’s celebration of Native American culture at the state capitol.

Democratic assembly member from San Bernadino John Ramos stated, “The history that has been written up to this point has been written without the voice of California’s first people.”

Ramos wrote a law mandating that the name Squaw be eliminated from all Californian locations.

There are presently streets with this word in West Sacramento, Woodland, Citrus Heights, Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado counties. This week is the deadline for submitting proposed name changes to the state.

“It was a derogatory name to Native American women. That’s what the settlers and the gold rush people only called us”, a tribal member Terisa Yonemura stated.

In an additional attempt to respect Native American customs,

  • Capitol Park is now home to a monument.
  • Some schools now go by different names.
  • An acknowledgment of Native American territory is becoming a common opening to government meetings.
  • Additionally, Sutter’s Fort is updating its interpretative plan, which now focuses more intently on the effects early pioneers had on Native Americans.

Additionally, there is a movement to rename the Sutter Buttes. Elders from the tribe say it’s critical to remember the people who have inhabited this land for countless generations.

Voters in West Sacramento have previously approved renaming Tebti Street. Citrus Heights and Sacramento County have not yet revealed their new names.
