Shooting at Yellowstone National Park on Independence Day: Ranger Injured, Suspect Dead

A shooting Thursday morning in Canyon Village, Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park left one person dead and injured a park ranger, according to park officials.

According to a press statement from Yellowstone National Park, the incident started overnight and ended early on Thursday. In the middle of the park, south of Tower Falls, near Canyon Village, there was a report of a gun-wielding individual threatening people. This prompted the response of park rangers.

Once in contact with the individual, rangers exchanged shots. The individual passed away. The identity remained a secret. An law enforcement park officer at Yellowstone suffered injuries. At a hospital, the ranger—whose name has not been made public—was stable.

With assistance from special agents of the National Park Service, the FBI is in charge of the investigation.

According to park officials, there are no current dangers to the public and no further details are available. Around eight in the morning, Todd Heskett reported that he heard gunshots coming from the Canyon Lodge restaurant while he and his wife and their two children, aged 14 and 22, were staying at the Canyon Village hotel.

He claimed that after phoning the front desk and 911, he was informed to remain in his room due to an active shooter situation. According to Heskett, the general store, the visitor center, and the Canyon Lodge restaurant were closed.

Heskett claimed that after about an hour, he got an emergency alert on his phone letting him know that everything had been resolved and he could go.
