This week, Secretary Kristi Noem of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) signed a memo that deputized up to 600 officials from the State Department to serve as immigration officers.
This move is part of a larger effort to increase the number of people who are deported and to strengthen border security across the government.
One hundred and fifty special agents from the Diplomatic Security Service of the State Department were deputized to assist with the arrest and expulsion of illegal immigrants after Noem issued an order that authorized their deployment.
“Under President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security will use every tool and resource available to secure our border and get criminal illegal aliens out of our country,” Noem stated. “The safety of American citizens comes first.”
The move is the most recent attempt by the department to raise the number of officials participating in immigration enforcement. This comes in the midst of a push by the Trump administration to aggressively increase the number of arrests and deportations of illegal immigrants.
The Department of Homeland Security has deputized law enforcement authorities with the Texas Attorney General’s Office, as well as law enforcement personnel from the Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department.
“It is DHS’s understanding that the Department of Treasury has qualified law enforcement personnel available to assist with immigration enforcement, especially in light of recent increases to the Internal Revenue Service’s work force and budget,” Noem stated last week.
A week ago, it was reported that the number of arrests made within the country has increased dramatically in comparison to the same time period in 2024, while the number of illegal immigrants who have crossed the border has continued to decrease.
In comparison to the 4,969 arrests that occurred over the same time period in 2024, the Department of Homeland Security released data indicating that there were 11,791 internal ICE arrests from January 20 to February 8.

However, the government has emphasized that it is not ruling anyone out of contention, despite the fact that it has stated that it is attempting to target the “worst of the worst,” with a particular emphasis on criminal illegal immigrants and members of gangs.
In the meantime, the administration has been successful in securing increased assistance at the border from Mexico and Canada, as well as commitments from Venezuela and Colombia to return their people.

Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security has taken steps to terminate parole programs that were implemented during the Biden administration as well as the use of Temporary Protected Status to enable migrants to avoid deportation.
In addition, the administration is making use of the resources provided by the Pentagon by sending military personnel to the border. Additionally, Guantanamo Bay is being utilized as a facility for the housing of illegal immigrants.
