Police in New Castle, Delaware, said a speeding vehicle crashed into a family’s minivan, blew a red light, and left the scene with a lady and a kid dead and six others injured.

The three-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Airport and Christiana roads on Wednesday at approximately 11:20 p.m. At 11:08 p.m., according to the police, troopers stopped a 2022 Kia K5 in the 100 block of South Dupont Highway.

Police said the driver left the scene of the traffic stop at some time. Investigators stated that the driver vanished from view of the troopers ultimately, and that the Kia was never actively sought by the police.

The 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan was turning from Christiana Road onto Airport Road when the Kia ran a red light and collided with it head-on, forcing it to overturn many times. This incident occurred around 12 minutes after the traffic stop.

The Kia was shown on camera colliding with another car that was stopping in a parking lot of a petrol station.

Police claim that the Dodge minivan was turning left on Airport Road when the eastbound thru lanes’ traffic lights changed to green, while the westbound lanes’ traffic lights stayed red.

The Kia crashed into the right side of the minivan in the intersection at the same moment as it was speeding west on Christiana Road and neglected to stop at the red light. Then the minivan flipped over and twisted around.

Following the collision, the Kia veered to the right, going over the cement median and colliding with a 2020 Hyundai Tucson that was getting ready to turn right from Airport Road onto Christiana Road heading west.

Both the 10-year-old daughter Zamiyah and the 29-year-old driver of the minivan, Karisma Stevens, of New Castle, Delaware, were pronounced dead at the site.

Stevens’ children, who made up the other four passengers in the minivan, were all transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. At least one of the children is in serious condition and all of them are receiving treatment at Nemours Children’s Hospital.

“They took my baby away,” Yolanda Urena, Karisma’s mother, stated. “Two beautiful souls snatched just like that…for what?”

According to Urena, her daughter recently earned an associate’s degree from Colorado Technical University after completing a program there.

“Everybody’s broken down. I just don’t even know how to tell the other kids,” she continued.

The 26-year-old Bear, Delaware resident who was operating the Kia was transported by paramedics to a local hospital due to severe injuries. The driver of the Hyundai, a 43-year-old Bear, Delaware resident, was also transported by EMS to a neighboring hospital due to severe injuries.

The drivers of the Hyundai and Kia have not been identified.
