A Colorado teen who lost three generations of her family to another teen who was asleep at the wheel in June has had a difficult time recovering both physically and emotionally.
Alex Moffett, 19, of Erie, Colorado, stated, “He took my entire family from me, even though he obviously didn’t mean to kill three people.”
Her grandma Patricia Moffett, 83, and father Derek Moffett, 55, passed away at the Warrensburg, Missouri, scene. She and her 16-year-old sister, Catherine Moffett, were transported to Research Medical Center in Kansas City following the collision. The only one who lived was her.
As the season draws near, Alex recalls her younger sister performing the Nutcracker with the Kansas City Ballet prior to their relocation to Erie, Colorado, which is outside of Denver. or the anticipation of Thanksgiving dinner with her grandmother and father.
“Every time I look at a picture of my sister my heart just stops for a minute. It’s really hard to just process. My dad was my best friend ever, he was the best person,” Alex stated.
This summer, the father and their teenage children flew to Overland Park, Kansas, to visit the girls’ grandmother, but primarily so the girls could meet Chris Stapleton.
“My grandma was taking us to Warrensburg because she grew up there, so she just wanted to show us around,” she stated.
After lunch at the cemetery where her family was buried, they headed toward the intersection of Business Route 50 and Missouri Highway 50.
Derek and Patricia Moffett were instantaneously killed when a 16-year-old truck driver who the Missouri Highway Patrol claims was dozing off at the wheel swerved off the road, hit their SUV, and went airborne. After giving her organs, Catherine passed away in the hospital.
“It’s been hard for sure, but it does hope in a really weird way that she was able to live on in the people she was able to save,” Alex stated.
The Montana State student has endured an equally taxing physical toll. She suffered a punctured lung and many fractures to her pelvis, ribs, arm, wrist, and orbital bones, necessitating facial reconstruction, elbow replacement, and wrist surgery.
One of her surgeons while she was still at Research Medical Center was able to get in touch with the country music artist she and her family were going to see live.
“We were supposed to just have a Facetime with him and they called and were like we are in really bad service, we’ll call you back in a few minutes. Like a minute later, we got a knock on my door and they just came in.”
The other driver who has not been charged as the Missouri Highway Patrol continues its investigation, Alex says, “part of me wants his life to be over and the other part of me wants him to just be able to go on and live a really good life and make something of it and make a difference in the world.”

In addition to working part-time at a Dairy Queen, Alex Moffett stayed at home in Colorado with her mother while undergoing therapy. To assist with medical costs, a GoFundMe was established.
She says she is studying in construction engineering technology at Montana State and intends to return there the following semester. She intends to travel to Las Vegas in early December in order to finally watch Chris Stapleton perform live.
