This week, police detained a male adolescent who they said struck a small child riding a tricycle while driving under the influence.
The Tavares Police Department reports that at around 7:15 p.m. on Monday, September 2, they were called to a report of a 2-year-old boy who had been struck by a truck that had been hoisted and “bulldogged.” Police saw neighbors helping the child when they arrived, and the boy was taken to a nearby hospital.
According to the police, the crime happened in the gated enclave of Oak Bend. Authorities were informed by witnesses that the truck was traveling “above the posted speed and in a careless manner within the neighborhood.”
The mother of the 2-year-old reportedly told authorities that when she and her husband were in their driveway, their children were riding bikes in front of their home, according to a news outlet. According to reports, she witnessed the vehicle accelerate down a street and merge onto a neighborhood road. According to reports, the woman and her husband “began yelling at the vehicle to slow down.”
Officials were purportedly informed by one witness that the victim was completely covered by the truck’s front tires. According to the affidavit, the car hit the boy and then “appeared to drag the child and bicycle” for a little distance before stopping.

The affidavit states that when police saw Montero, he was only wearing swim trunks, and his eyes were bloodshot. Given that Montero is under the legal drinking age, his blood alcohol content was reportedly .062 and .057, which is beyond the permitted limit. Investigators surmise that Montero had a higher blood alcohol percentage at the scene of the collision.
Later on, police found out that the 2-year-old boy passed away from his wounds. After being taken into custody, Montero was charged with DUI manslaughter. He is still being held without being bound.
“Our hearts are saddened at the loss of this innocent boy’s life in something that was easily preventable,” the police department said in a statement.
