JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — At BridgePrep Academy of Duval on Monday, more than a dozen kids were sent to the school nurse’s office for treatment of insect bites they received after participating in a regular field trip to the playground.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department reports that at around one in the afternoon, a class of fourth graders was playing outside when several of the youngsters began to complain to their teacher that they were itchy.
According to JFRD, units were dispatched to treat the 27 pupils who were injured.
According to JFRD, the symptoms progressed to the point where localized regions of edema appeared on the arms and legs, although this did not affect the body’s functioning.
One adult and 27 children in all were sent to the hospital for treatment of bites.
According to JFRD, it is still unclear what sort of insect was responsible for the bites; nevertheless, the school is looking into the matter.
The adult and all of the children’s parents declined medical transport to the hospital, therefore the adult did not go to the hospital either.

Following their time spent playing outdoors on April 24, 2023, several pupils informed their teachers that they had been bitten by insects. The employees of BridgePrep inspected the insect bites and investigated the matter.
To protect the well-being of the students and call for medical assistance.
There was no need to transfer any pupils to other facilities for extra medical care, and everyone was discharged back to their families.
At BridgePrep Academy, the well-being and protection of our pupils are one of our highest concerns. All of BridgePrep Academy of Duval’s outside activities will be moved inside for the time being while we work with the local department of health and specialists in the pest control industry to determine and solve the root cause of the problem.
