Tragic Death of Bedridden Woman Caretaker Charged Following Disturbing Conditions

After being detained, a Gwynn Oak resident was charged with providing her sick aunt with substandard living conditions; the aunt eventually passed away from her wounds.

According to court documents, Antoinette Gray, a double amputee who was bedridden following a stroke 15 years prior, was discovered covered in feces, bed bugs, maggots, and disposable absorbent pads used to collect her own waste.

Following her arrest on August 12, Brittany Brooks, 34, was accused of three charges of abuse of a vulnerable adult.

According to court records, Gray suffered from many bed sores and experienced excruciating pain with every motion. According to the police, the smell of decaying flesh was strong in the house and she was clinging to her bedding.

According to court records, first responders described Gray’s infections as some of the worst they had ever seen.

Gray informed the officers that although Brooks had only recently moved in, he had been caring for her for a year. Court records show that Brooks’ aunt was uncooperative, refused to take a bath, stopped eating, and refused to take medical assistance.

According to investigators, Brooks claims that her aunt’s despair was the reason behind her August 12 911 call.

According to court filings, first responders feared that removing the mattress would put Gray into shock, so they took her to the hospital with it still attached to her body. August 15 marked Gray’s death.

The next court date for Brooks is early September. After the police investigation is over, more charges may be brought, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office for Baltimore County.
