Prosecutors claimed that a man accused of driving under the influence and hit-and-run in Garden Grove injured a 5-year-old boy and four of his family members, leaving the child brain dead.

Following their Sunday night collision with a 2003 Toyota Camry, Jacob Ramirez, his parents, and his two younger brothers were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The crash happened just after 7:30 p.m. in the 12300 block of Haster Street near Twin Tree Lane, where the mother and father were riding with the kids in bike trailers, according to Garden Grove police.

According to authorities, Angel Ramirez, 27, and his two children, a five-year-old boy named Jacob and a seven-year-old sister, were taken to hospitals in critical condition.

Stable vital signs sent 25-year-old Angela Hernandez Mejia and her 7-month-old daughter to the hospital. Later, the mother was let free.

The offenses of hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, failing to stop at a hit-and-run accident with injury, and driving while intoxicated and causing injury were brought against Ceferino Ascencion Ramos of Santa Ana.

Additionally, according to the prosecution, he might face enhanced punishment if he causes significant bodily harm to a victim and renders them unconscious or paralyzed.

Two of the victims had brain damage, which left them comatose, according to a criminal complaint filed by the district attorney’s office in Orange County.

The prosecution claims that Ramos got into his vehicle in Santa Ana and drove to an Anaheim liquor store to purchase further beer. It is alleged that he had a.22 blood alcohol content.

During his arraignment on Tuesday, Ramos remained silent. On July 25, he is expected to be arraigned in Westminster’s West Justice Center.

To aid the crash victims, a GoFundMe page has been established.
