According to authorities, on Tuesday, a homeless man killed a 74-year-old woman by pushing her into a commuter train that was approaching in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The woman struck her head on the train and collapsed onto the platform in downtown San Francisco, according to a statement released by officials with Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART. At a nearby hospital, she passed away.
Just after 11 p.m. on Monday, the woman was shoved at the Powell Street station, according to the police. Early on Tuesday, a 49-year-old male who was classified as transitory by the police was checked into jail.
The woman’s identity was withheld by BART police, as was her motivation. The inquiry is still ongoing.
The Bay Area’s major transit system, BART, experiences relatively few homicides. As of now, this is the year’s first killing.
