On Monday night, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) had a meeting with the former president Trump, following reports that the Republican from Florida may run for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who just said he would leave the position in November.
“Great to see President Trump tonight! We’re going to continue working together to win big in 2024 and fix Washington.” Scott posted on X.
Additionally, Scott shared a picture of himself with Trump, who gave a “thumbs up” with his hand gesture. The gathering takes place right as the contest to become the next Senate Republican leader formally begins.
In an appearance with “The Charlie Kirk Show” on Friday, Scott declared he was “seriously considering a run” for the Senate GOP leader.
“We could actually have somebody that actually believes in this country and believes in solving the problems of this country running the Senate when we get a majority in November,” Scott stated on the show. “We could make big change.”
Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), two prominent Republicans and capable lawmakers, have already declared their candidacies for the crucial post.
Scott initiated a challenge against McConnell’s campaign for reelection in 2022. Scott was defeated by a vote of 37–10, despite Trump’s support for his challenge. Only participants in the Senate Republican Conference are permitted to cast secret ballot votes.
