For the youngsters in one Long Island community, going through a middle school rite of passage is no longer possible after school administrators installed “vape detectors” in the restrooms.
The FlySense FS300 vape detectors were placed at Lindenhurst Middle School. These devices can identify the presence of THC, a component of marijuana, as well as nicotine in the atmosphere.
Changes in sound and air quality are also sensed by the detectors.
Thus, when disputes occur within the lavatories, the specialized equipment has the ability to notify school administrators immediately.
The detectors, according to Derek Peterson of Soter Technologies, have an AI system that can distinguish between a door slamming, a toilet lid slamming, and “when somebody is roughhousing in the bathroom.”

According to Peterson, the detectors do not come with microphones.
Frank Naccarato, the principal of the school, receives an email right away if any irregularities are found. After then, the busted students will be linked to expert intervention programs.
“There’s still a consequence, but now we’ve added that education piece,” Naccarato stated. “They also have to do a component of research based on vapes, how it hurts you.”
At the request of 15-year-old Vanessa Probst, who saw her peers were so addicted to vaping that they were racing to do it in the restroom between classes, the district looked into the detectors.
“I was doing research on it, and I saw the side effects and how you can get popcorn lung, all the severe cancer you can get,” Probst stated.
After installing the devices a few weeks ago, the district has already apprehended two vaping students. In Copiague and Wyandanch, the same detectors will shortly be placed in school restrooms.
