Millions of Americans will see a 2.5% rise in Social Security in 2025 as a result of the 2025 COLA hike. Retirees can check the future amounts even if they won’t receive this rise until January 2025.

A note informing recipients of the revised amounts following COLA will be sent by the Social Security Administration shortly. Retirees will be able to view these notices on their my Social Security account in addition to receiving them in December.

When can retired couples expect to get their typical 2025 COLA payouts of approximately $3,089?

According to confirmation from the Social Security Administration, all retirement benefit payments that include the Cost-of-Living Adjustment will begin to be made on January 3.

If you qualify for the payment due on January 3:

  • You were not eligible for the other retirement benefits in January
  • Did not violate any SSA regulations
  • You began receiving Social Security before May 1997
  • You are receiving SSI payments from the Federal Government concurrently.

Retirees who are not eligible for the first check with COLA may be eligible for one of the Wednesday payments in addition to the January 3 payment. Paydays, for instance, are scheduled for January 8, 15, or 22.

  • Retirement on January 8: eligible if born between January 1 and January 10
  • Retirement on January 15: eligible if born between January 11 and January 20
  • Retirement on January 22: eligible if born between January 21 and January 31
