A Facebook message that became popular on social networks started to circulate widely among users on June 9, 2024. According to this post, families with children would begin receiving a $300 monthly direct transfer from the IRS as a Child Tax Credit in July.

“In 2024, the IRS will make a direct deposit payment of $300 on the 15th of each month, to children under the age of six,’  according to the post. ‘Those between the ages of six and 17 will receive $250 each month. The IRS’s monthly CTC 2024 payments are expected to begin on July 15, 2024, for eligible individuals”.

This statement is untrue because it misrepresents statistics from the American Rescue Plan, which awarded child tax credit advance payments to parents (not children) between July and December 2021.

The program was discontinued since it was a component of the assistance provided to persons affected by COVID-19.

This, however, is unlikely to occur because the measure needs to be passed by the Republican-controlled House.

A plan to raise the refundable child tax credit was approved by the House of Representatives in January, but the Senate never had a chance to vote on it.
