14-year-old in Stolen Vehicle Kills NJ Driver in Head-on NY Crash Police

Authorities say a man from New Jersey died when a 14-year-old driving a stolen car hit his car head-on in New York early on March 28.

Captain John Watterson of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office said that the teen was driving south in a Toyota 4Runner on Route 9 in Rhinebeck when he hit Jonathan A. Kiech, 49, of Fords, who was going north. This happened around 6:30 a.m.

Kiech was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and the child was taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Since then, he has been sent to a detention center while more questions and charges are looked into.

Watterson said that the 4Runner was one of several cars that were reported stolen from northern Dutchess County and eastern Connecticut on Monday night, March 27, or early Tuesday morning, March 28.

Police are still looking into these thefts, but they think they were done by a group that used to run out of Connecticut.
