A man was sentenced to 30 years to life in jail on Tuesday for following a lady from the street, following her up six flights of stairs into her New York City apartment, and fatally stabbing her.

The Manhattan State Supreme Court condemned 27-year-old Assamad Nash for the February 13, 2022, murder of 35-year-old Christina Yuna Lee. On June 18, Nash entered a guilty plea to one count of each of the felonies of murder and burglary with intent to commit sex crimes.

Lee was heading back to her building in Chinatown, Manhattan, according to the prosecution, when Nash trailed her up the stairs and into her unit. They claimed that Nash forced his way inside and made an attempt to rape her.

After calling 911 after noticing Lee wrestling with Nash, the neighbors waited more than an hour for the police to break down the door and enter the flat. Lee had at least forty stab wounds when they discovered him dead in the restroom.

“Christina Yuna Lee was killed in an unthinkably horrific manner in her own apartment at the hands of Assamad Nash,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated. Bragg said Lee’s death “not only devastated her family but left a lasting impact on an entire community.”

Lee was employed by digital music platform Splice as a senior creative producer.

A portion of the Asian-American community in New York harbored concerns that Lee’s murder—a Korean American—was a component of an anti-Asian wave of violence that occurred during the coronavirus outbreak. However, Nash did not face any hate crime charges.
