9 Killed, Including 6 Children, in Devastating Canal Overturn

Authorities said that nine people—six of them children—had died after a car overturned in a canal in Florida. According to police, one injured survivor from the incident is still being treated in a hospital.

The event happened in Palm Beach County on Monday night. Authorities claimed that they started getting complaints of an automobile in a canal close to Belle Glade at around 7:30 p.m.

According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Tom Reyes, first responders discovered an upside-down car with just the wheels showing.

The driver failed to correctly negotiate a left turn in the roadway when the car was going west on Hatton Highway “for undetermined reasons,” according to the accident report from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident report states that the car left the road and proceeded into the shoulder before colliding with a guardrail and crashing in the canal.

At the site, four individuals were declared dead, as per the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. Six others—two by helicopter, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue—were taken to a nearby hospital. The sheriff’s office reported that five more persons passed away at the hospital after that.

Six children were among the fatal victims, according to the accident report: a 1-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy, two 5-year-old boys, an 8-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old male. The crash report also states that three women, ages 21, 30, and the driver, 56, died.

The crash report named Jorden Hall, age 26, as the only passenger who survived. According to the accident report, he sustained severe injuries in the collision and is still being treated in a hospital.

The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office stated, “We have one survivor out of a total of 10 victims, including babies. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this heartbreaking incident.”

According to officials, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office and fire rescue personnel—including divers—responded to the site. Investigating the cause of the crash is the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.
