When a car hit a family standing on the sidewalk at 4th Avenue North and Commerce Street, a night out in downtown Nashville turned fatal. Police believe the driver was under the influence, and he is currently facing charges.

Zack McCann was present when the awful event occurred.

“It’s an unfortunate situation where you have people at that level of using substances,” McCann stated.

McCann and his team hurried to assist right away and dialed 911. While the others were transported to the hospital, Wienke passed away from his wounds.

“Obviously, the wife of the man who was tragically killed, it was like she knew instantly and was clearly in shock,” McCann stated. “She kept saying, ‘God, I hope he’s okay. I know he’s not.’ That will stick with me for a little while.”

John Williams, 25, was the driver, according to Metro Police. At the moment, there were three people in the car with him. Before police arrived, Williams allegedly rammed many parked cars after striking the family.

A Metro Police officer said he could smell alcohol on Williams’ breath right away and that his eyes were wet, red, and bloodshot. Inside the vehicle, police also detected the smell of marijuana and discovered many bottles of alcoholic beverages.

“He was doing at least 60 mph,” McCann continued.
