FORT MYERS, Fla. – On Sunday, a car crashed into a power pole and caught fire. This cut off the power in Fort Myers.
According to the San Carlos Park Fire Protection & Rescue Service District, when crews got to the car on Oriole Road, they found fire flooding the engine and passenger areas. Even the utility pole was on fire.
Officials say that the driver was nowhere to be seen while they were putting out the fire.
People here are confused because of the fiery crash.
“What I don’t understand is why the speed limit is 30 mph. “How can someone do so much damage going 30 miles per hour?” questioned Dunham.
Mark Dunham was right up front.
“In the middle of the night, I thought my house had burned down or something,” Dunham said.
Many of the homes on Oriole Road did lose power and internet.
Dunham also said, “The power went out this morning, and the guys right in front of the driveway are still working on the cable TV to get it back up and running as we speak.”
Dunham said, “They broke the wires on top of the pole, so the car had to hit with a lot of force.”
“FPL trucks were lined up right in front of my driveway, blocking it and everything,” Dunham said.
Officials from the fire department say that the driver was found later, but he didn’t want any medical help.
