JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A crash early in the morning killed one person. This was the 48th traffic death in Duval County in 2023, according to police.

On Sunday morning around 5:30 a.m., a Mazda was going very fast north on Century 21 Drive. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says that the driver lost control of the car on a curve. The car then hit a light pole and a tree. The accident took place at the entrance to the Boathouse Apartments.

Police say the car flipped over and landed on its roof.

One of the people in the car was thrown out of it and taken to the hospital in critical condition. JSO said that the second person in the car stayed there and was found dead at the scene.

Police say that neither of the people in the car was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The cause of the crash is still being looked into.
