A “smishing scam” that aims to obtain people’s personal financial information is being alerted about by Pennsylvania Turnpike authorities.
A press release from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission states that scam texts purporting to be from the “Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services” are being sent to unknown numbers.
According to the commission, the communications include urgent demands and warn that if past-due payments are not made promptly, further fees will be applied to the account.
It is not advisable for someone to click the link in an unexpected text like this one.

In Pennsylvania and other states earlier this year, EZ-Pass customers were the target of a similar phishing fraud.
A comparable “smishing scam” that uses text messaging or SMS was recently brought to the attention of the inhabitants of Philadelphia by the Parking Authority.
Customers using E-ZPass have approved and secure ways to check their account, including the PA Turnpike E-ZPass website and the PA Toll Pay app available on the Google Play or Apple App stores.
Consumers can report bogus messages at www.ic3.gov, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
