Upon their arrival, officers encountered a man in the lobby who they later identified as the suspect, Louis Olivier Charles.
Simultaneously, Miami police responded to Jackson Memorial Hospital in response to reports of a man with a gunshot wound.
Witnesses recounted a confrontation between Charles and the victim near the apartment complex pool, with the dispute centering around Charles purportedly damaging the victim’s necklace.
One witness intervened to separate them, and then the victim, along with other witnesses, attempted to leave for their rental car, which was parked on the second floor of the parking garage. Charles followed them.
At this point, the argument escalated, and Charles admitted to firing a shot when he fell to the ground while the victim attempted to punch him.
Reportedly, two witnesses transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where hospital staff informed authorities that the victim was undergoing surgery in critical condition.
In an email sent to all Bay Parc residents, the community manager said in part:
“While we are grateful that our residents and teammates are safe, this is a stark and scary reminder of why we have safety protocols in place, and how important it is for all of us to take an active role in keeping our community safe.”
The community manager stressed that the safety of their residents comes first, with a focus on specific rules: Everyone must undergo a criminal background check when applying, and using a firearm, whether by a resident or guest, is a serious lease breach.
Charles has been taken to TGK. Although he argued self-defense, the arrest report indicates that the force employed by the accused doesn’t align with the force used by the victim. He’s facing an attempted felony murder charge.
