The first Black candidate chosen to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate was Angela Alsobrooks, who won a congressional seat in the state on Tuesday.

Alsobrooks, the county executive for Prince George, faced off against Republican Larry Hogan, the former governor of Maryland for two terms. They were competing to succeed retiring Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat who served three terms but chose not to run for reelection.

With Hogan vowing to be independent of Republican nominee Donald Trump and Alsobrooks supporting Democratic contender Kamala Harris and running mostly on her support for abortion rights, both presidential campaigns have loomed large over the election.

An amendment to the Maryland constitution pertaining to abortion is on the ballot. Voters are casting ballots on reproductive rights in eleven states nationwide.
