Baby's Death on Highway Traced to Family's Tragic End in Murder-Suicide

According to officials, there may have been a murder-suicide in Los Angeles related to the death of an infant discovered on a roadway on Monday.

An 8-month-old girl’s body was discovered early on Monday morning on the 405 Freeway. The Los Angeles Police Department reports that a 9-year-old child with moderate injuries was found on the shoulder, still alive.

Not long later, a woman in Redondo Beach, whom the authorities identified as the mother of the children, struck a tree with her vehicle. Police confirmed that she was declared deceased at the spot. She was recognized by police as 34-year-old Danielle Johnson on Tuesday afternoon.

In an apartment in Woodland Hills, the father was discovered dead on Monday from what appeared to be stabbing wounds. Police on Tuesday identified him as 29-year-old Jaelen Chaney.

The two “became involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into Johnson becoming violent and stabbing Chaney, who succumbed to his injuries at scene,” according to police on Tuesday. This happened early on Monday morning.

At the site, a knife with biological evidence was found.

Additionally, it is suspected that the mother abandoned the two kids before running into a tree on the highway.

According to authorities, the two kids were “expelled” from the automobile while it was in motion. Whether the infant passed away on the highway later on or was already dead is still unknown.

The 9-year-old girl, who is thought to have witnessed the murder, was treated for her wounds in a hospital and is currently under guard, according to the police.

The next morning, neighbors spotted blood in the vicinity and reported hearing an altercation coming from the apartment the previous evening, according to Los Angeles ABC station KABC.

“Their door was wide open, there was blood on the floor leading into their apartment, and then a trail of it in the hallway leading up to the elevator and I saw some blood on the wall,” a 26-year-old woman stated.

According to the woman, her father contacted 911, and when they checked inside the apartment, they discovered the man dead.

“He was deceased, he was facedown on the floor,” she stated. “And there was a lot of blood.”
