According to the prosecution, a woman killed and dismembered her partner, and a Maryland judge sentenced her to 61 years in jail for the crime.

A St. Mary’s County jury found 46-year-old Michelina Desiree Goodwin guilty in March after an eight-day trial of second-degree murder, using a handgun while committing a crime, and disposing of a body without authorization in relation to the death of 50-year-old James Volodimir Nalborczyk.

According to Jaymi Sterling, the State’s Attorney, the judge gave the maximum penalty.

“The defendant’s heinous act of shooting the victim in the back pales in comparison to the gruesome details following the murder. After killing the victim, the defendant dismembered him, and scattered his remains throughout our county and a neighboring county,” Sterling stated.

On December 21, 2022, Nalborczyk’s family reported him missing to the Maryland State Police. After ten days, police discovered he hadn’t been seen or heard from. According to authorities, additional investigation revealed that foul play had a role in his disappearance.

Body pieces were found by troopers in neighboring Charles County and St. Mary’s County. Goodwin was detained by police for murder. In mid-January 2023, Larry Murphy, 42, was also taken into custody on suspicion of murder and accessory after the fact.

As per the probable cause arrest affidavit that Southern Maryland News managed to get, Goodwin informed Nalborczyk’s family that she had last seen him in early December 2022, just before he left for Virginia in a work vehicle, with the intention of ending their relationship.

However, the affidavit claims that she later informed police that she and Nalborczyk were fighting when she pointed a revolver at him. He was killed when it detonated and struck him in the back.

She then apparently asked Murphy for assistance in dismembering Nalborczyk and getting rid of the parts.

Murphy denied having any part in it. After a jury last year found him guilty of the accusation, he was subsequently charged with accessory after the fact and given a one-year jail sentence, according to documents.

“My hope is that with the outcome of today’s sentencing hearing, the victim’s family can finally find peace, justice, healing, and closure after the horrifying homicide of their beloved family member,” Sterling stated.

“The last few years Jimmy has worked odd jobs helping everyone around him and is remembered by many working at the St. Mary’s farmer’s market. He never stopped working and trying to help others. Jimmy will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him,” the obituary stated.
