Visitors and tourists parking at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport are now paying extra. In order to finance enhancements to parking services, the airport raised parking fees.

The following are the new daily parking fees at BWI:

  • Extended Duration $11 at this time, $8 earlier
  • Everyday Garage $16 right now, $12 back then
  • Garage Hourly $30 presently, $22 earlier

According to BWI CEO and Executive Director Ricky Smith, “parking revenue is our second largest source of revenue, next to what we receive from the airlines for their space rental and landing fees.”

According to a BWI representative, parking prices brought in $79.8 million in income in the 2023 fiscal year. Nevertheless, the final 2024 statistics are still pending.

The airport parking services have been improved and enhanced. To assist vehicles in finding available spaces, a new guidance system has been installed. The outdated system from 2001 has been replaced. Additionally, the system keeps track of when the garage is at zero percent capacity.

“Without this system, we would typically close the garage with about 15% capacity left,” Smith stated. “With the parking guidance system, we can keep the facility open until we have zero capacity left.”

Airport officials told that in addition to eight new electric buses joining the shuttle fleet, the increased revenue will also result in upgraded lighting along the terminal roadway, as well as the installation of an airport parking reservation system.

Reginald Lee of Washington, D.C. stated, “I’m willing to pay it as long as it goes back into improving the services.” Announced in May, the parking cost adjustments coincide with America’s busiest summer travel season ever.

Since mid-May, BWI TSA officials have scanned approximately 6,000 extra individuals on a daily basis. According to airport officials, parking prices at BWI are currently comparable to those at other significant U.S. airports.
