Authorities revealed that a human hand and skull discovered in a freezer at the beginning of this year belonged to a 16-year-old Colorado girl who vanished in 2005.
The human parts were found in an appliance at a home in Mesa County, Colorado, close to Grand Junction city, on January 12 in the 2900 block of Pinyon Avenue.
Authorities said someone reported that the freezer was being given away for free by the new owners of the house, prompting them to respond to the scene.
The remains of Amanda Leariel Overstreet, the biological daughter of the home’s former owners, were identified through DNA testing, the Mesa County Coroner’s Office said in a statement Friday.
When Overstreet vanished, she was thought to be around sixteen years old. Since April 2005, according to the authorities, she has not been seen or heard from.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office claimed in a statement that the house is now owned by a new owner who is “completely unrelated” to the case, and that this is the focus of the inquiry into Overstreet’s disappearance.
“The house was purchased, fully remodeled and sold to the current owner. We urge you to respect the current owner and their neighbors’ privacy and avoid driving by the home or taking photos,” according to the sheriff’s office.
According to the sheriff’s office, Overstreet has never been listed as missing.

In a message to the media, Wendy Likes of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office public information office said that they are requesting time from the public “to really figure out what happened.”
Likes stated that it is “very sad” that a child went missing and that there is no documentation of her absence. “We want to be sure that it’s a thorough investigation, that we get all the details and the facts right,” Likes added.
