A business has been engaged by relatives to help the police and search parties find an 81-year-old Fort Lauderdale woman who has vanished from sight.

On the evening of July 21, Carol Tormey—who has dementia and Alzheimer’s disease—was reported missing. Police in Fort Lauderdale promptly released a Silver Alert with Tormey’s photo and the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck they thought she was driving.

As they step up their search for her, Tormey’s family is still optimistic about her safe return. The last time anyone saw Tormey was on the 1500 block of South Ocean Lane, Fort Lauderdale. License plate readers revealed that she turned around and headed back south after traveling north on US 1 to Deerfield Beach.

Although her truck was last seen close to Sheridan and A1A, her family was still able to locate her.

“We have AirTags with her,” her son, John Tormey stated. “There is one in her purse, one in her keys and one in the truck, and those were spotted going west on Miramar (Parkway).”

The Apple AirTags could no longer be traced because of that. Since then, Carol Tormey’s family has engaged a business to assist in her search.

The volunteer organization that Tormey’s family hired, Sunshine State Sonar, claims to have discovered a car containing human remains, but the remains do not belong to Tormey.

“When we first seen it, we thought it was going to be Carol. And when we dove on the vehicle, we realized it was not her car,” Mike Sullivan, of Sunshine State Sonar stated.

The search for Tormey has turned up more than a dozen buried cars so far. The identification of the body discovered Tuesday night has not yet been made public by the authorities, but it was located inside a blue 2011 Honda Civic that fits the description of a car from a local missing person’s case from 2018.

In the meantime, Tormey’s family promises to do all in their power to locate her.

“If anybody out there has seen the truck just parked on the side of the road or seen her walking anywhere from Deerfield all the way down to Miramar, please, I beg you. I need to bring my mom home and it’s, it’s killing the family,” John Tormey stated.

The family is holding out hope for her safe return even though they claim there haven’t been any significant developments in this case. Please contact the police if you know anything regarding Carol Tormey’s location.
