Costco had to recall over 80,000 pounds of butter because the label neglected to specify that the kitchen staple contained milk — and many social media users are rolling their eyes at the dairy issue.

In October, the FDA issued an initial recall of 79,200 pounds of Kirkland Signature butter owing to an undisclosed allergy. Cream is listed as an ingredient on the packages of both salted and unsalted Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter, yet there is no allergy notice stating the butter “Contains Milk.”

Many internet users are puzzled by the odd recall. The most popular comment is, “It’s butter.”

“80,000 pounds of Costco butter was just recalled, because the label doesn’t say that it contains milk. It’s butter. News articles are telling people how they can return, or safely dispose of, the butter. It’s butter,” one person deadpanned.

One social media user joked, “Can y’all please safely dispose of it at my house? I have a lot of holiday baking to do.”

“Next they’ll recall beef that might contain cow,” another user chimed in.

While butter, which is prepared by churning milk, has less lactose, those who are allergic to milk are more likely to react negatively to it. The CDC states in the recall that milk is one of the key foods that “account for the most serious allergic reactions in the United States.”

The FDA did not specify whether the product caused any illnesses or bad reactions.
