There is not much time left for residents to apply for Operation Blue Roof, which has been working to help give them time to get their roofs fixed after recent storms.

The program has provided coverage for Cynthia Petitjean’s house following a big tree that fell onto it during Hurricane Milton. Although the tree has been taken down and is now in fragments, Petitjean stated that she has been working for a month to restore her house to its pre-storm state.

During Hurricane Milton, she was at home when the tree collapsed, and she described the event as frightening. Before beginning repairs, she shared photos she had taken the following morning.

Regarding fixing the damage, she remarked, “It was just, like, not the best way I want to spend my money. But it could have been much worse.”

Petitjean expressed her gratitude for Operation Blue Roof’s provision of a temporary roof over her head and for her animals’ safety during the storm.

The Army Corps of Engineers’ Operation Blue Roof emergency field operation is led by Maj. Cory Bell. He claimed that many people had benefited from the easy-to-follow procedure.

“Weā€™re supporting currently 25 counties that have experienced damage,” Bell stated. “In South Florida specifically, but all the way out to Palm Beach County and Stewart, as well, based on the tornado events that came through with Milton.”

To ensure everything is secure, the tarp installation process entails an assessment and then expert installation. As she copes with the additional damage to her property, Petitjean finds it simpler to have a safe roof.

“The blue roof allows the more urgent projects to get done, and then I can take my time with a roofer,” she stated.

Residents have until November 14 to apply for Operation Blue Roof if their roofs were damaged during Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The blue tarps can survive rain, but not a storm, officials warn, so it’s vital to keep that in mind. For eligible homeowners, the service is free.
