Following the mass shooting that took place at a mall in Allen, Texas, officials said that posts on a Russian social networking site suggest the gunman plotted for weeks before he actually opened fire on the mall.
On Saturday, he was able to kill eight people and injure seven more before the authorities were able to kill him. His internet activities allegedly revealed a passion for white supremacy and mass killings, as stated by the investigators.
It is one of a record number of mass shootings that have taken place this year. Since the beginning of 2018, there have been 208 incidents of mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive. And representatives from Florida in Congress are continuing to discuss ways to reduce gun violence.
When ten people were shot at a nightclub in Miami Gardens just a few days into the new year in Florida, the state had only been in the new year for a few days. This was the first of 41 mass shootings that have taken place in the Sunshine State this year, including a drive-by shooting in Lakeland that left 11 people injured.
By the time six people, three students, and three staff members were gunned down at a school in Nashville on March 27, this year had already set a record for the number of people killed in mass shootings. This week, the total hit 251, which is another all-time high for the series.
“We live in a country where the number of people killed in mass shootings exceeds the number of days in a year. The fact that being shot is the biggest cause of mortality for youngsters is shocking. Our lawmakers need to be asked, “What are you going to do about it?” because this is the issue that has to be answered. U.S. Representative Maxwell Frost, a Democrat from Orlando, stated.
Frost is the primary sponsor of a piece of legislation that would establish a new division inside the Department of Justice called the Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
It would gather statistics on shootings, investigate them, and then make recommendations to amend the legislation in order to prevent gun violence.
On the other hand, Republicans could view that as a sneaky ploy to limit the sale of firearms.
U.S. Representative Kat Cammack, a Republican from Ocala, stated that “we are villainizing the weapon rather than the person who is committing the crime themselves.”
According to Cammack, efforts should be directed less toward restricting access to firearms and ammunition and more toward establishing treatment programs for mental illness.
“People want to villainize and point the finger at the weapon itself,” said the researcher. On the other hand, they never discuss the individual who was responsible for the crime. Therefore, I believe that we ought to begin there,” Cammack stated. “That is a less divisive topic, something that Republicans and Democrats can actually get behind.”
“Yeah, it’s true what they say: ‘People murder people.’ “The reason we need safe gun laws is that people kill other people, and I want to make sure that you and I are safe,” added Frost.
One of the deadliest school shootings in American history took place in Uvalde, Texas, when 22 people were murdered and 18 more were injured. The anniversary of this tragedy will occur later this month.
The year 2021 is currently leading the pack with 818 recorded incidents of mass shootings. This year, the United States of America is on course to shatter that dismal record.
