Officials stated on Thursday that an 8-year-old was discovered dead in a car following the shooting and death of a man by police who was accused of killing his wife on a bridge that connected Maine and New Hampshire.

The man has not been named by the authorities. According to a press release from Maine State Police, he contacted 911 at 2:07 a.m. to report that he and his wife had gotten into a dispute and that she had passed away.

When police arrived to their Troy, New Hampshire, home, they discovered a woman had passed away.

According to Maine State Police, the man’s vehicle was discovered parked on the Maine side of the state boundary, on the Piscataqua River Bridge over Interstate 95. Maine and New Hampshire troopers attempted to persuade the individual to turn himself in.

“The bridge was shut down for several hours to protect the public, while negotiations were attempted, and the scene was secured,” Maine State Police stated. “Negotiations were ultimately unsuccessful, and the male exited the vehicle and raised a firearm.”

The individual, who appeared to have fallen into the Piscataqua River, was fired at by troopers. After his body was pulled out of the sea, he was pronounced dead.

In the man’s car, the authorities discovered the 8-year-old’s body in the backseat. The toddler had been shot, but not by law enforcement, according to Maine State Police.

The three deaths were that of a “husband, wife, and child,” according to a Maine State Police spokeswoman during a Q&A period at a press conference on Thursday.
