On July 21, the Margate Police Department responded to a domestic assault involving a deadly weapon at a residence near the 6600 block of Winfield Boulevard.
A man identified as Jahmel Nerestant, 71, from Margate, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly attacking his daughter with a machete.
According to the victim, who is Jahmel’s daughter, the confrontation occurred while she was moving her belongings out of his home.
Jahmel reportedly became aggressive and belligerent, denying her as his daughter and chased her around the house while she was collecting her belongings.
Witnesses stated that Jahmel retrieved a machete during the altercation and threatened to chop the victim’s head off. He allegedly lunged at her, but she managed to raise her hands to grab his arm, preventing a severe injury. However, the machete did make contact with her upper right arm.
After the incident, the witnesses called the police, and Jahmel was arrested. He was then taken to the Northwest Medical Center for treatment of injuries related to the violent confrontation.
Once medically cleared, he was transported to the Broward County Main Jail. Later, he was released after posting a $5,000 bond.
