Authorities say a father in Virginia strangled his one-year-old kid and then abandoned him in his bed, where his mother discovered him unconscious when she returned from work.

The 24-year-old Nathaniel Lee Edmonds is accused of second-degree murder.

A press statement stated that on September 18, at approximately 2:40 p.m., Front Royal police—located roughly 70 miles west of Washington, D.C.—reacted to a 1-year-old boy who was experiencing cardiac arrest at a residence situated in the 300 block of North Royal Avenue.

The youngster was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital by Warren County Fire & Rescue medics, who later declared him deceased. A probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by a news outlet says the boy’s mother departed for work and put Edmonds in charge.

Upon her return home, Edmonds was “nowhere to be found,” and the boy lay unconscious on his bed. Edmonds was discovered by police strolling along U.S. 522 North at Fairground Road after a phone location located him in north Front Royal. He was taken into custody and brought in for questioning.

Edmonds is said to have confessed after Miranda that he choked his son “for minutes with both of his hands because the child was not listening and he couldn’t take it anymore.”

According to the affidavit, he told police that he noticed the youngster foaming from the mouth. The boy’s name has not been made public by the police.

Edmonds was detained on suspicion of domestic abuse last year, according to the Daily. He is still being held without bond at the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail.

The date of his upcoming court appearance is December 19. Please contact the Front Royal Police Department at 540-636-2208 if you have any additional information.
