The father from Illinois, who admitted that he “lost his mind” and killed his teenage daughter by beating her, ostensibly because she wanted to go prom, will probably live out the rest of his days in prison.

Mohammed Almaru, 44, was given a 55-year prison term on Thursday for the May 2022 murder of his 17-year-old daughter Mia Maro inside their house. After approximately an hour of deliberations, a jury found him guilty in August of first-degree murder, according to a local Patch story.

Mia’s aunt discovered the girl’s body at the family’s Tinley Park house on May 1, 2022.

Prosecutors claimed that in addition to the bloodied and twisted metal rod found on the kitchen floor, Almaru assaulted the woman, who had numerous bruises on her body, using a rubber mallet that was later located in the garage.

Almaru took medications in what appeared to be an attempt at suicide and was discovered close to his daughter, cutting himself. According to local news outlet, he texted a family member to admit to the crime.

“I lost my mind, went out of control and beat the s— out of her,” he stated. “I f—ed up big time I’m sorry.”

A few days had passed after Almaru had denied Mia permission to go to her high school prom when the murder occurred. He purportedly admitted to relatives that he had read texts on his daughter’s phone and became suspicious of her.

A small automobile accident had caused Mia to become fearful of her father, according to court documents. In the days leading up to her murder, she contacted relatives, expressing fears that he would “beat her” or “kill her.”

Mia was “a beautiful soul and the light of our lives,” as well as “an amazing daughter, niece, sister, granddaughter, and the best friend anyone could encounter,” according to Randa Almaru, Mia’s aunt, in a GoFundMe page.

In addition, Mia took on the role of primary caregiver for her mother, who was listed as “incapacitated 3 years ago” on the GoFundMe.

Although the judge ruled that Almaru must serve out his entire sentence, he will be given credit for the more than two years he has already spent in detention, according to CBS Chicago.

Almaru’s attorneys requested a new trial and a sentencing review following the verdict, but both requests were turned down.
