Along with strong gusts and a storm surge, Hurricane Debby also brought with it packages of cocaine valued at over $1 million, according to officials. This is just the most recent in a long line of narcotics discoveries made along Florida’s coast.
Drugs were swept ashore in the Florida Keys by Debby, a Category 1 hurricane that hit the state but was later reduced to a tropical storm, according to acting chief patrol agent Samuel Briggs II of the U.S. Border Patrol on social media.
Briggs posted two pictures of the packages along with a statement, “Hurricane Debby blew 25 packages of cocaine (70 lbs.) onto a beach in the Florida Keys.”
According to Briggs, a good Samaritan discovered the stash of cocaine, which has a street worth of over $1 million, and alerted the authorities.
The Florida coast is not far from Caribbean transit centers for drugs being trafficked from South America to the United States and Europe, and cocaine has been discovered there on multiple occasions.
According to Briggs, recreational boasters off the Florida Keys discovered 65 pounds of cocaine floating in the water in June.

About 100 feet below near Key West, divers had discovered 25 kg of cocaine earlier that month. The identical quantity of suspected cocaine was discovered washed up on Dauphin Island, Alabama, the very next day.
A beachgoer discovered over $1 million worth of cocaine washed ashore near the Florida Keys in May. More than $100,000 worth of cocaine sachets washed ashore on several Florida beaches in 2023. Additionally, during a family fishing trip earlier in the year, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor caught 70 pounds of cocaine.
Bricks of cocaine were found on two beaches in 2019 following Hurricane Dorian’s devastation of the Florida coast.
