A family from New York City is suing a funeral parlor for delivering their mother’s coffin to another nation in error.
Two days following her 96th birthday, Carmen Maldonado passed away. Her desire was to rest by her spouse at the Ecuadorian cemetery. Her Queens-based family was getting ready for the burial in Ecuador when they came across an unexpected video on TikTok.
In the video, a Guatemalan family is shown as being horrified to discover a woman’s body in the coffin during their 38-year-old son’s funeral. Carmen Maldonado was the one.
The same Corona funeral house, Rivera Funeral house, had prepared both bodies.
“I was devastated, I couldn’t believe that this could be such a big confusion,” Carmen’s daughter, Rosa Sicha stated. “I started to cry, and I was incredibly upset.”
Carmen had been mistakenly sent to Guatemala by the funeral home. The youngest son, Manuel Minchala, took a plane to Guatemala to get her.
“They tried to bury my mom in Guatemala, and I was begging the people there. I had to deal with the health department, the police, a lot of big, big processed to export the body to a different country,” Minchala stated.
The family claims that when they questioned the funeral home about the confusion, the funeral facility rejected it. The funeral home’s owner firm and the family are currently being sued by the family.

“They tried to cover it up, and there is no excuse for that. And if the family did not see this on TikTok and confront them, the funeral home would have never told them,” attorney Phil Rizzuto stated.
Both their lawyer and the funeral home remained silent. She was buried in Ecuador once her family was allowed to return with her.
