Gainesville Man Faces Charges After Assaulting Stranger and Attacking Officer

Demetrius Lashod Cunningham, aged 25, was apprehended last night and charged with a series of offenses, including robbing someone without using a weapon, assaulting two officers in a severe manner, resisting arrest with force, resisting arrest without force, and having marijuana in his possession.

This all occurred after he allegedly attacked a stranger and then proceeded to hit one officer and spit on another.

Around 7:15 p.m. last night, Cunningham reportedly approached the initial victim outside the Publix at 1302 N. Main Street. He told the victim, “You’re not a gangster.”

The victim stated he wasn’t a gangster and didn’t understand why Cunningham was saying that. According to the victim, Cunningham punched him in the face around 12 times before taking his phone from his pocket and fleeing.

An officer later found Cunningham walking in the 900 block of NE 2nd Street. There was a brief chase on foot before Cunningham allegedly struck the officer twice in the head, causing the officer to fall.

More officers arrived and apprehended him. During transport to the jail, Cunningham purportedly spat on another officer. A search following the arrest revealed approximately 2.19 grams of marijuana in Cunningham’s pocket.

Cunningham has a history of convictions, including five felonies (three of which were violent) and four misdemeanors (two of which were violent).

He has served two sentences in state prison, with his most recent release being on August 19, 2023. Judge Walter Green set bail at $45,000.
